Click this link, read, and discuss! Art historians…gasp!!!
I’m sorry, this is re-writing history. Art, like any cultural material, is a product of their time–for good or for bad. Not to mention, intellectual property of the artist. Could they do it if the artist were still alive? Sufficed to say, we cannot place our contemporary viewpoints, aims, language, outlooks, politics, ect. onto the past. We must learn about the past and understand why they used or did things a certain way, not judge it… and especially NOT change it. Why this is so dangerous is because another group, say white supremacists, or a Hitler of the future could justify doing this, but in reverse. How can we learn about the past and, try to make a better–and even more tolerant– future if it is erased?
